Brand New Hyundai i20
The Hyundai i20 is the cleverest, best-looking & most spacious version ever.
Only a select few cars have that unique ability to rise to every challenge you can throw at them - without an exorbitant price tag. Meet the new generation Hyundai i20. Let’s get straight to the point: this is a €18,020 car that feels just as right outside an upmarket hotel as it does at the school gates. Drawing on Hyundai’s all-new, fluidic design language, it’s styled to look sporty, agile and characterful, yet it boasts some of the most economical engine ranges in its class. In short - it’s a smart buy.
The Hyundai i20 is, it’s fair to say, a bit of a looker. That’s why the Red Dot design awards, the most prestigious in the industry, commended Hyundai for bringing together a few carefully chosen design features to create an effect that’s really quite hard to replicate.
Viewed side-on, it sits on its haunches like it’s waiting to pounce. The effect is further enhanced by the gloss black C-pillar, giving the impression the roof is almost floating above the bodywork. It’s the little details that really make a difference though; the tapered LED headlamps reach right around the front wings and connect with an elegant feature line running the length of the car, creating a sleek, streamlined profile. From behind, three-dimensional rear lamps highlight the i20’s modern, sophisticated design. The higher-spec models also come with 16-inch alloy wheels as standard and a whole range of new paint options.
The fun stuff
Inside, the i20 comes generously equipped with a wealth of technological features rarely found on a small car in this price bracket. Hyundai i20 Deluxe include parking sensors to keep you out of any unfortunate scrapes, BlueTooth and handsfree to keep you focused on the road Higher-specced versions include steering wheel controls too.
Designed and developed in Europe, this is a car that was conceived with a road trip adventure in mind. Every model comes with Aux and USB ports as standard, meaning you can simply plug in your phone, tablet or laptop and hit the road, while the Premium version can automatically respond to the temperature outside and features a panoramic sunroof for everybody to enjoy the view.
The clever stuff
As with every offering in the current Hyundai range, the i20 can keep you safer than ever before. All models include six airbags, ensuring everybody in the car is protected from an impact. The firm’s newly developed Electronic Stability Control also comes as standard, keeping the tires as grippy as possible in tough corners, as does a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System to warn you in the event of a loss of pressure. In the i20, difficult hill starts suddenly aren’t so difficult, because the car can detect when to apply the brakes for you. Most models also feature a lane departure warning system to watch out in case you stray from the centre, alerting you with a warning sound when necessary.
Five full-sized adults are going to feel a little uncomfortable if everyone’s crammed into a Fiesta. They’ll probably wish they were in an i20 instead because once again, Hyundai’s ergonomics boffins have devised ingenious ways to pack a lot of space into a small car. You’ll find more legroom in the i20 than in almost any other car in its class, and that’s before you discover that the extremely accommodating 326-litre boot means the dog can come along too.
The i20’s on the road price is extremely competitive. The sub-€16K entry-level version equates to just €170 a month if you opt for a finance package, while even the range-topping Premium model can be yours for a modest €276 per month.
Once it’s on the driveway, Hyundai is so confident in the reliability of their cars that current buyers needn’t bother about maintenance costs until 2022, thanks to Hyundai’s industry-leading five years, unlimited mileage warranty. It includes a free vehicle healthcare check every year, and a five-year roadside assistance programme.
Running costs promise to be similarly agreeable. The i20 engine range spans a 1.0litre turbo petrol engine, which will give you more than 50 mpg on Irish roads, up to a 1.4 petrol with a quoted fuel economy of around 42mpg.
The bottom line
When you’re in the market for some new wheels, you usually get what you pay for. But in an i20, that simply isn’t true - you get far more.
