The Hyundai ix20 is a whole new take on the conventional MPV. Here’s how
The family-focused MPV, with its boxy styling and less-than-exhilarating driving experience, hasn’t typically been much to get excited about. Until now. Because Hyundai has created something entirely different. It’s called the ix20, and it smashes the conventional norms of an MPV out of the water.
It looks like the car of the future
Hyundai’s new fluidic design language can be spotted in every corner of the ix20. Despite a 1600mm roofline, which leaves a comfortable amount of headroom for even the tallest passengers, this is still a sporty looking car. The signature Hyundai hexagonal grille looks like it’s ready to devour the air in front, while the sleek headlights and rear lights flow around the body to give an air of aerodynamics. The ix20 comes with alloy wheels as standard too; you can choose 15 or 16-inch wheels, or an optional set of 17inchers if the style is your priority.
It’s incredibly versatile
Transporting cumbersome loads isn’t a problem in the ix20, because the seats can be easily adjusted to carry two, three, four of five passengers depending on what’s in the back. The rear seats can be folded completely flat into the floor to give the car the load space of a small van – 1486 litres in total. Or you can split them 60:40, leaving room for a long piece of cargo and a passenger in the back too.
Lots of space on the inside doesn’t make for a bulky body on the outside though; the 2615mm wheelbase means parking becomes a breeze compared to other cars with this much space.
It’s affordable without compromising on quality
The ix20 is priced extremely competitively, starting from just €22,270. There’s a flexible finance available package too.
Your money gets you a whole a range of class-leading features, plus Hyundai’s five years, unlimited mileage warranty for that absolute peace of mind. Fuel costs aren’t going to break the bank either because the ix20 is one of the most economical cars in its class; you’ll use only 5.6 litres of fuel on 100km of combined driving.
It’s designed to make life easy
Difficult hill starts suddenly aren’t so difficult in the ix20 because the Hill Start Assist function is on hand to help you set off without the car rolling backwards. Rear parking sensors come as standard, which simplify parking by guiding you into the space, alerting you with warning noises when you’re getting close to an obstacle behind the car. There’s voice-activated Bluetooth connectivity as standard too, which lets you make calls mid-journey without taking your eyes off the road once.
It offers a great driving experience
You can opt for a 1.4 litre petrol, a 1.6 litre petrol or a 1.4 litre diesel depending on your driving style, and each has been redesigned for 2017 with fuel efficiency and increased torque in mind. The ix20 has been widely praised by commentators for its high-set driving position, its slick 6-speed manual gearbox (1.4L versions only) and agile handling. Driving the ix20 on Irish roads, it’s easy to forget you’re in a relatively tall, roomy MPV.
It keeps you safe
The ix20, along with its siblings up and down the Hyundai range, uses new technology to keep its passengers safer than ever on the road. The electronic stability control system helps to control the vehicle in tough corners by applying the brakes to individual wheels in the event of understeer or oversteer. Traction control further minimises the risk of a crash, but if the worst does happen, the ix20 has been given the highest possible safety rating by EuroNCAP.
